I took this picture from the Palmetto Dunes beach last month from the waterline. I am always amazed at how wide the beaches are on Hilton Head and, more specifically, Palmetto Dunes. We also vacation at the Outer Banks of North Carolina and they have to do frequent beach nourishment projects because the sand gets washed away quickly. Hilton Head is fortunate to not have to deal with this problem.

The wide beaches on Hilton Head are so nice. My favorite feature of the beach is that you can ride bikes on it! Can anyone explain with the sand is so hard packed compared to any other beach I visit? I notice the sand is also a little darker brown. Is this related?

They re-nourish here too...most recently to the tune of $20 million! Tax money well used.

How often do they do "beach nourishment" in Palmetto Dunes? How do they get the sand onto the beach? Trucks? I've never heard of this on Hilton Head. You can't argue with the results.

They have barges that they stage up in the sound near Rebaut Island (part of HHP) and then they go down the coast line in the ocean pumping it up onto the beach through big tubes. There was a big to do about it the last time because it was running into tourist season. They staged all the tubing they use in the Islander's Beach parking lot in the winter and half the parking lot was blocked off. Lots of the budget is spent to keep our beaches nice for the tourists because they are where most of the budget comes from!
