We did not get far. We first visited Pinehurst NC as I like to golf. My wife does not golf and that was all Pinehurst was about. Anything else, you had to go 45 minutes away to Raleigh (and it snows there!). Hilton Head was the second place and Amelia Island was to be next. We fell in love with HHI and never made it any further. We have been to Amelia Island since for the Concours event there and it was nice but we are convinced we made the right decision. We're not real crazy about FL. We also have been to Naples, FL several times as we have VA friends who retired there. Lots of wealthy people there and 80 degrees in January but also a lot of 6 lane highways with strip shopping centers. Our friend's golf club is $20K / year...way out of my league. And again it's FL, Your mileage may vary. Good luck in your search.

Dave,

My wife and I lived in the Tampa / St. Petersburg area for almost 10 years and I can confirm much of what you're saying about Florida. Many wealthy people retire there from northern states and have driven real estate prices through the roof in most desirable areas. The median house price in South Tampa is probably close to $700K these days and the private schools (K - 12) cost as much as some of the best public universities in the country.

The one nice thing is there's no state income tax in Florida, but that's less of a concern when you're retied. There are places in Florida I would consider retiring to. like St. Augustine Beach or Anna Maria Island, but Hilton Head is high on the list as well.

Cheers,
Will

Speaking of retiring...Dave/Will, what are some advantages of retiring in South Carolina from a financial point of view?

Thanks-

JohnnyT

JohnnyT,

We'll have to let Dave answer that one since I haven't done much research. I still have 15-20 years to go before I retire. I'm not sure if there are financial advantages, but it sure is a great place to live.

Cheers,
Will

Wrong week to have your vacation on Hilton Head! Lots of rain and lots of thunder. Bluffton had the most rain in the US in the last 24 hours. Beware of flash floods tonight says the Island Packet. This afternoon my wife and I tried to go down to the Kroger on the south end and traffic was backed up big time. Turns out one lane was flooded and they were pumping it out. Feel bad for those that waited all year for their vacation and got this. Prior to this, it hadn't rained in at least a month.

Dave,

It looks pretty nice today. How's your summer going so far. Do the crowds seem as big as last summer?

Cheers,
Will

Nice if you like 95 and major humidity. Today started out with a big rumble of thunder at 6:30 then got very dark and poured. Then by 8:24 tee time it all cleared up and was sunny all day. Our daughter from Phoenix was here for a week with their family so we are in recovery mode. Grand kids are fun but they have a lot of energy. Got more coming July 4th. That's when it gets real crowded...the parkway and 278 will be backed up past the outlet malls on Saturday afternoon. The smart thing to do is have supper in Bluffton and then cross the bridge about 7.
Saw about 50 wood storks over at Oldfield out in Okatie yesterday.

My goodness is it hot today! Summer has arrived and I am not ready for this sticky heat yet.Our air conditioner is getting a workout this week. I sure would love to be swimming in the ocean on Hilton Head right this instant and then take a nap under the beach umbrella. I don't have much longer to wait!!

Dave,

I can feel the humidity from here. That is a great picture, though.

Very hot and humid lately but it's to be expected in July in SC. We need some rain.
