Dave,

Welcome to the HHL message board. I used to live on Hilton Head way back in the early 1990's and plan to retire there one day. I always enjoyed the area in the off season when the beaches are deserted and you don't have to fight traffic. One of the perks of being a full time resident.

Cheers,
Will

It ain't all fun and games! There's so much stuff falling from trees that I spend half my time making trips to the neighborhood landscape debris dump! At least I'm not shoveling snow!--Dave

The green outside my back door...when the lagoons had water in them. It has been so dry around here for so long that the lagoons are scarey low. Some of my buddies at the golf club who have been here a long time (15 years or so) said they cannot remember them ever being as low as they are now.--Dave

Couple under 30 thinking of relocating to HHI this summer... Any advice to offer? My husband agreed to move if I secure a job. Hoping to get a teaching position with the Beaufort school district or a private school. These are our concerns if anyone can offer insight...

Obviously, hilton head is viewed as a retirement community. But there must be a good population of young families as well, right?

We are coming from a large city where job options are broad. I'm in the field of education and my husband is military/personal trainer.

My husband visits the mountains weekly for training (running, etc). I know this is the low country, but is there any good hill training near by? Perhaps a state park?

My mom lives on the island and loves it, but sometimes complains how "dead" the island is during he winter. Our immediate concern was how busy it would be in the Summer. We are currently living in Greenville (lots to do...lots of traffic). What's your take on the seasons of hilton head? Does the crowd, or lack of, bother you?

All advice welcome!

Hi Tj, while this is an area with a lot of "older" retired people, there are still quite a few families with young kids here. We live in Hilton Head Plantation which is probably the most "residential" of the gated communities (a lot of full time residents). I would say HH is a fairly vibrant community all year long obviously moreso in the summer. The people here seem to be very friendly and have received my wife and me into the community warmly. The folks at DMV, Beaufort Co govt offices, SS office, etc. have all been extremely helpful, professional and friendly. Having moved here from the Washington, DC (northern VA) area, the traffic here at it's worst is no comparison (you may feel otherwise)! Bear in mind if you live on the island there's obviously only one way on and one way off. Not sure about the job market (and hopefully won't have to fine out) but I'm sure the options are somewhat limited compared to a large city. Terrain here is flat and more flat (as you know if you've been to visit your mom) so not sure how your husband will like that. I love it. I can bicycle for hours without really getting tired. There is the ever present threat of huricanes and if you own property there are extra expenses to consider like wind and hail insurance and flood insurance. The bottom line is it's a beautiful place and we LOVE living here. Sometimes I find myself laughing out loud!--Dave

Hi Johnny, raining today but still 60 degrees. A friend from Canada that I knew through work was here yesterday and we played golf with shorts and short sleeves. He said when he left home there was ice on the roads!

TJ, Sounds like a good plan to rent for a while. That way you can figure out where you really want to be before you buy. We owned our little house in Hilton Head Plantation for 8 years before moving here. We rented it out long term the whole time through Miller Long Term Rentals. They have a pretty good web site that shows pictures of their inventory, etc. You could get an idea of what's out there and what to expect to pay.--Dave

Still here! Still lovin life! Finally warmed up. Last few weeks have been chilly (by normal standards here) but it still beats lots of places. There's been two weeks of spring break crowds and they got a little short changed on the weather. The Heritage golf tournament is in a couple of weeks and there will be good crowds here then. The azaleas bloomed back in February because of the warm winter and the blooms seemed to last forever maybe because it got cold.--Dave

Cheers,
Will
