Sea Shack, The Information: Casual dining at it's best. Fresh seafood straight from the docks served on paper plates in the aptly named sea shack. Great service, a fun atmosphere and, most importantly, delicious food.

Great Atmosphere 9/27/2009

This was our first visit to the "Sea Shack". We chose them because of their economical menu we found online. We stood in line on a sidewalk outside of the restaurant which was about 15 people deep. We looked through the windows and could see one of the cooks that was a black man with dreads and had a tie-dyed shirt and this knit cap that seemed to rise uo on his head at least 2 feet, lol. We were sold then because no matter if the food was good or not, we had already experienced our entertainment. We ordered our food, both of us chose the "Choose 3" that comes with hushpuppies and 2 sides. I had grilled shrimp, scallops and catfish with a mini salad and carrots and green beans as my 2 sides. My husband ordered the grilled shrimp, scallops and catfish with french fries and cheese grits as his sides. Every bit of it was delicious and as fresh as if you made it all yourself. The only waitress there was serving all of the customers and she was a black woman thast had a bandana on her head and kinda favored Aunt Jemima. Everyone was courteous and we will be going back again before we leave.

I have been looking forward to my return trip to the island and making another stop at the sea shack. My wife, son and his girlfriend along with myself had a wonderful time cutting up with everyone in line as we waited our turn to feast. It was time well spent. The food was as good as it gets. My wife keeps bringing the Sea Shack up as we plan our July fourth trip to Hilton Head. We will see you at the Sea Shack.

Did live up to all the hype 5/27/2009

This place really lived up to all the hype. I took my family there after reading a lot of good reviews about it online. Yes, it is not fancy but the Sea Shack is sure an experience. There was a line outside and we did have to wait about 25-30 min to be seated, but the service was friendly. Once we got our table, the food took only a few minutes to get ready since they had already taken our order. We all liked our food. Even the side dishes were pretty good. I had mac and cheese and Au graten potatoes with my fried shrimp. I am not big fan of fried foods, but this was really good. There was a nice seasoning on it that made all the difference. My wife really liked her blackened Wahoo, also seasoned very well. She enjoyed her cole slaw and the kids both liked thier food as well. Even the hush poppies were good and no one in my family has liked them in the past 7 years, we have been living in the South. Portions are decent and prices are reasonable, we could have easily managed with 3 meals. My kids are 10 and 12. The only low point was the very loud, guitar dominated Blues music. We were, unfortunately, seated right in front of the kitchen, where the music was the loudest. All together, though, this was a good experince and we are going to come back next year.

We tried the Sea Shack a few years ago and it is a stop every trip now. We usually get take-out and head back to our condo. They have the best-tasting conch fritters I have ever tasted! I look forward to going there just to get those fritters!! I agree with previous reviews: think Soup Nazi from Seinfeld (but that just makes it fun) and I wish it were an actual little shack next to the water! But, what can you do? It is what it is and we will definitely be there every trip we make to HHI!

The first year after having watched Rachel Ray's $40 a day program We tried the shack. We were not dissappointed and have returned several times during our long winter stays along with all of our family and friends. It is just down home seafood.

Our Sea Shack experience has gained permanent status as a running joke in our family.
We spent a lovely hour standing in a line that ran through the parking lot, past the dumpsters and bathrooms. Not real enjoyable when we you have a few children under the age of 5 in your party.
When we did finally make it to the front door we learned that max seating was for 5 to 6 people. So we had to split up into three groups. The first group got seated about 20 minutes before the last group.
The food was Long Johns Silver's quality, but with a larger ion of choices. The prices were adequate, but not as affordable as you would expect based on the fast food experience.
The "lady" taking the order had the customer service skills of your average DMV worker.
I stongly encourage you to avoid this restaurant.

We loved this restaurant and ate at it three times on our last visit. They have a great no nonsense menu. This place is really just about the great food. We love cramming in at a table, my teenager waiting for his buffalo shrimp po'boy, looking over the menu wanting so badly to try something new but loved what we had the time before. Be prepared when you're up in line though, you'd better know what you want and what sides are going with it, think soup nazi from Seinfeld, just adds to the ambiance. I love it that my daughter is almost hopping in anticipation that she won't have decided on her sides by the time it's her turn to order. I wish it was near the beach and not in a business park, but, other than than, don't change a thing ;)

Found it a Bit Overrated 2/23/2008

After doing research before our trip, it seemed that The Sea Shack was a given for any Hilton Head tourist. Not only was it featured on Rachael Ray's $40 a Day, but scores of folks on travel message boards recommended it as a must-try. It is difficult to tell if it was the hype, atmosphere, or food that led to a bit of a disappointment. Overall I'd say it was still a good, albeit touristy, experience. But I have definitely had better seafood.
I liked the atmosphere inside: visitors stand in line waiting for their turn at an ordering assembly-line of sorts. The cramped and dive-like quarters certainly create the right "look" that one expects for fried seafood. That said, the exterior was not what I expected. The Sea Shack is actually not near the beach. For some reason when I think of a "Sea Shack" in my mind it is by the sea. I am sure area zoning likely contributes to its non-waterfront location, knowing this information in advance might help adjust your expectations.
Service was prompt and friendly. High points were the fried shrimp, oysters, and she crab soup; the grilled jerk grouper was just okay. Maybe we caught them on an off day, but based on our visit, it did not compare to the taste of gulf coast seafood.

I had grouper both nights (fried and blackened). I also had the alligator and the gumbo. Everything was excellent.
My wife had shrimpburgers both nights. She also had the crab and tomato bisque. And she raves about the collard greens and okra.
Next year we plan to go there a couple of times again! This place is fantastic.

What a great place for lunch. the grouper sandwich is tremendous! Nothing fancy here, just great food at a great price, not a tourist trap. a small place with cheap plastic table covers and a line out the door 20 people deep. The people know, treat yourself to the "Shack"

We go here every visit. It is always crowded, about a half hour to get inside the door. It's not your typical seafood restaurant like say the Old Oyster Factory, but everything is fresh and delicious. The last two visits I had the shrimpburger combo and the Shack Attack Combo, which includes the top sellers from the menu. A++++ Give it a try.
