Sea Shack, The Information: Casual dining at it's best. Fresh seafood straight from the docks served on paper plates in the aptly named sea shack. Great service, a fun atmosphere and, most importantly, delicious food.

We loved this restaurant and ate at it three times on our last visit. They have a great no nonsense menu. This place is really just about the great food. We love cramming in at a table, my teenager waiting for his buffalo shrimp po'boy, looking over the menu wanting so badly to try something new but loved what we had the time before. Be prepared when you're up in line though, you'd better know what you want and what sides are going with it, think soup nazi from Seinfeld, just adds to the ambiance. I love it that my daughter is almost hopping in anticipation that she won't have decided on her sides by the time it's her turn to order. I wish it was near the beach and not in a business park, but, other than than, don't change a thing ;)

Found it a Bit Overrated 2/23/2008

After doing research before our trip, it seemed that The Sea Shack was a given for any Hilton Head tourist. Not only was it featured on Rachael Ray's $40 a Day, but scores of folks on travel message boards recommended it as a must-try. It is difficult to tell if it was the hype, atmosphere, or food that led to a bit of a disappointment. Overall I'd say it was still a good, albeit touristy, experience. But I have definitely had better seafood.
I liked the atmosphere inside: visitors stand in line waiting for their turn at an ordering assembly-line of sorts. The cramped and dive-like quarters certainly create the right "look" that one expects for fried seafood. That said, the exterior was not what I expected. The Sea Shack is actually not near the beach. For some reason when I think of a "Sea Shack" in my mind it is by the sea. I am sure area zoning likely contributes to its non-waterfront location, knowing this information in advance might help adjust your expectations.
Service was prompt and friendly. High points were the fried shrimp, oysters, and she crab soup; the grilled jerk grouper was just okay. Maybe we caught them on an off day, but based on our visit, it did not compare to the taste of gulf coast seafood.

I had grouper both nights (fried and blackened). I also had the alligator and the gumbo. Everything was excellent.
My wife had shrimpburgers both nights. She also had the crab and tomato bisque. And she raves about the collard greens and okra.
Next year we plan to go there a couple of times again! This place is fantastic.

What a great place for lunch. the grouper sandwich is tremendous! Nothing fancy here, just great food at a great price, not a tourist trap. a small place with cheap plastic table covers and a line out the door 20 people deep. The people know, treat yourself to the "Shack"

We go here every visit. It is always crowded, about a half hour to get inside the door. It's not your typical seafood restaurant like say the Old Oyster Factory, but everything is fresh and delicious. The last two visits I had the shrimpburger combo and the Shack Attack Combo, which includes the top sellers from the menu. A++++ Give it a try.
