Santa Fe Cafe Information: The best, most stylish Mexican restaurant on Hilton Head, the Santa Fe Cafe has rustic, Southwestern-inspired decor and cuisine that infuses traditional recipes with nouvelle flair. Menu items are often presented in colors as bright as the Painted Desert.
Dishes might include tequila shrimp; herb-roasted chicken with jalapeño cornbread stuffing and mashed potatoes laced with red chiles; grilled tenderloin of pork with smoked habañero sauce and sweet-potato fries; and worthy burritos and chimichangas.
The chiles rellenos are exceptional, stuffed with California goat cheese and sun-dried tomatoes. The quesadilla is one of the most beautifully presented dishes of any restaurant in town.

but they need to do something about the noise on the "kitchen" side of the restaurant. Last time, we took the grown kids and our bill was nearly $300 but it was so noisy we couldn't talk. If you do go, ask for the main dining area or outside upstairs, which on a warm evening is magical!

Nice Atmosphere + Great Food = A Return Trip 2/23/2008

After a delicious dining experience, Santa Fe Café made it onto my short list of places to repeat on future Hilton Head trips. The actual location of the restaurant surprised me a bit, as it is in a strip mall on the main highway. However, sitting upstairs on the rooftop provides a better than expected outdoor atmosphere - views of nearby trees, a bar, and fireplace create a casual and comfortable setting.
The Sopa Azteca (chicken tortilla soup) and White Sangria were highlights for me, while my husband talked about the "Ultimate Indulgence" dessert (toffee soufflé, coffee ice cream, and whipped cream) for days. One minor note on the dessert: taste was not affected (I just removed it and moved on), but the strawberry garnish was not in good condition. This is a pet peeve of mine in restaurants; I'd rather the kitchen just omit a strawberry garnish if it is bruised with bad spots. We also ordered the Plato Combinaion plate and munched on chips and salsa while waiting for our food. Overall everything met or exceed expectations. Service was prompt and attentive.
Total cost: $47.60 + $10 tip

One of the more expensive places to eat when all is said and done, but well worth if if you're in the mood for great Southwestern fare. To us, the perfect place to eat is upstairs, outside - if it's a bit chilly they'll have the fireplace lit, otherwise just enjoy the open air experience. Even if you eat inside, head up for a cocktail or dessert upstairs afterwards.

The food is beautiful to behold and so good we were exclaiming over each bite of a new dish. We started with the appetizer sampler, and everything on the platter was delicious--a subtly seasoned crabcake that was truly crab, with very little of anything else; piping hot fried oysters, so moist and tender they melted in the mouth; a blue corn tacquito stuffed with minced duck; wedges of quesadilla that mingled chicken, cheese and a deliciously smoky combination of corn and green chiles. The chiles rellenos are truly fantastic, with a complexity of flavor that puts other restaurants' versions to shame. There is no childrens' menu, but the friendly staff is happy to make suggestions and to modify existing menu items to suit picky young tastes, and the food is so imaginatively arranged that my two little boys were entertained just looking around the room at what was being served.

We stumbled across Santa Fe Cafe in 2003 and it was an instant hit. The restaurant features three distinct areas. On the main floor, there is a bar and tables. On the second floor there are more tables looking out onto the lower level. Lastly the rooftop cantina with it's own bar and live entertainment (check with the restuarant for dates and times). We always try to get a table on the roof top.
The food is absolutly amazing. I have had the pork tenderloin, the chimichanga and steak among others. The portions are large and flavours are great.
The staff is friendly and willing to please.
A must-see!
