A knowledgeable and informative waiter, top-notch service, and delicious food made for a great evening at Michael Anthony's. Despite its location in a beach town, the mood and atmosphere are reminiscent of an urban establishment. The salad with baby greens, sweet Gorgonzola, marinated pears and honey roasted pine nuts was memorable; this was the highlight of my meal. For my entree, I ordered the "Penne alla Boscaiola" (penne pasta with wild mushrooms, peas, pancetta, tomato and a touch of cream) and substituted potato gnocchi for the penne after waiter mentioned he liked to sub the gnocchi. The sauce and mushrooms were excellent. I enjoyed the dish, but found the gnocchi to be a bit too "heavy" for my personal taste; I’d stick with penne next time. My husband's filet was satisfying and cooked appropriately. For dessert, the soft-centered chocolate souffle cake served with vanilla gelato was fulfilling, but did not live up to the reputation built by previous reviews and the waiter as the "best dessert" in town. My husband ordered "Vanilla Panna Cotta con Frutta Fresca" - vanilla cream pudding served with fresh seasonal fruit, it was just okay.
Considering the food quality, service, and atmosphere, we hope to be back during our next Hilton Head visit.
