Charlie's L'Etoile Verte Information: Outfitted like a tongue-in-cheek version of a Parisian bistro, our favorite restaurant on Hilton Head Island was also a favorite with former President Clinton during one of his island conferences. The atmosphere is unpretentious but elegant, and it bursts with energy in an otherwise-sleepy shopping center. The service is attentive, polite, and infused with an appealingly hip mixture of old- and new-world courtesy. The kitchen has a narrow opening that allows guests to peep inside at the controlled hysteria. Begin with shrimp-stuffed ravioli, and move on to grilled tuna with a jalapeņo beurre blanc (white butter) sauce, grilled quail with shiitake mushrooms and a Merlot sauce, or veal chops in peppercorn sauce. End this rare dining experience with biscotti or a "sailor's trifle." The wine list is impressive.

A Mixed Experience 2/23/2008

We went to Charlie's L'Etoile Verte for lunch and had a mixed experience. The atmosphere was nice and service average. I'd pass on the side salad and creamy crab soup in the future. The side salad is mediocre, just your standard bagged salad mix with tomato vinaigrette, definitely not worth $3.50. And the creamy crab soup was okay but need some additional flavor. That said, the fruit and cheese plate was excellent; a fresh selection of strawberries, kiwi, grapes, apple, melon and two cuts of cheese. Other highlights were the fresh bread and chocolate mousse dessert. (The mousse itself was excellent but skip the whipped cream on top as it was not very good.)
Charlie's L'Etoile Verte has a notable reputation for serving a former president and having a daily handwritten menu. The lunch menu we had was not handwritten and the entire experience was just average. Based on other online reviews, I assume dinner is a better experience.

I can't say enough about this restaurant!! Our service was OUTSTANDING!! The food is served on hot plates, melts in your mouth and no knife required because everything is fork tender. Tast and presentation get an A+ from us. We want to go back and we are only here for a week!

Where the locals go for a good meal... 12/31/2006

Charlie's is a place to enjoy food and be seen if you're a local. (Did you know 35,000 folks live full time on the island?) Just a really good atmosphere and fancy enough without being pretentious. Superb wine list. If you're looking to chill out by yourself, just part yourself at their bar - they'll server you dinner there if you like. The food is great - and if you're going to pay a lot because you're on an island, why not enjoy the food?

The decor of the building was most enjoyable and they have a new menu daily. Our group had rack of lamb, grilled tuna, filet mignon and flounder saute'(+ something french that I could not pronouce). The food was excellent and the service was superb. My husband was impressed with their wine list. We enjoyed our dining EXPERIENCE.
